Back in 1981, Gareth undertook the geotechnical survey for the construction of Kylesku Bridge, the iconic structure which forms a highlight of the new North Coast 500 route around northernmost Scotland.

The bridge was designed to replace the old ferry route across this 120m wide and 25m deep tidal channel, slashing the mileage for ambulances serving the most remote part of the UK. In the original photo shown here, an X marks the spot where the pier will eventually stand.

With its 24m high deck and curving V-shape inclined piers, the bridge quickly became a classic photo and film location, most recently for Top Gear… and Gareth… who revisited this month to check that all’s still well with the foundations!
